   French-Swiss watchmaker
   Known as a marine clockmaker and writer on horological matters, Ferdinand Berthoud was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, and settled in Paris in 1745. His extensive skill and technical training led to his invention of the marine clock, used to determine longitude at sea. He also developed various other types of watches, including one in which the hour and minute hands were mounted and traveled separately. For his achievements, especially inventing the mechanisms of marine clocks, Berthoud was made a member of the French Academy of Sciences and of the Royal Society, London. His writings on horology include Traité des horloges marines (1773), Essai sur l'horlogerie (1786), and Histoire de la mesure du temps par les horloges (2 volumes, 1802).
